Box Office Returns: Change in Market Rules

Wednesday, May 13, 2009

We have updated the rules covering the expiry of our weekly box office returns markets.

We have previously used the box office figures published by Nielson EDI to expire the weekly markets. Beginning this weekend (with the market listed for Friday May 15th releases) we will be using the figures published by Box Office Mojo to expire the market. No other significant changes have been made to the rules.

The new market rules are as follows:

A contract will settle (expire) at 100 ($10.00) if this movie grosses over the amount specified in the contract in the opening weekend.

A contract will settle (expire) at 0 ($0.00) if this movie grosses the same as or less than the amount specified in the contract in the opening weekend.

The standard opening weekend is Friday - Sunday. Expiry will be made using the Weekend Gross published by Box Office Mojo on Monday.

In the event of a long weekend that includes Friday the weekend is Friday - Sunday. Expiry will be made using the Weekend Gross published by Box Office Mojo on Monday.

In the event of a long weekend that includes Monday the opening weekend is Friday - Monday. Expiry will be made using the Four-Day Weekend Gross published by Box Office Mojo on Tuesday.

This market is for the opening weekend only and does not cover any screenings before the opening weekend begins (such as previews, advance screenings or a mid-week opening). The Weekend Gross figure published by Box office Mojo does not include any such screenings.
